Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on treatment technique that involves applying gentle, sustained pressure in the restrictions of the myofascial connective tissue to eliminate pain and restore function. The essential time element of each hold has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon. When a low load (gentle pressure) is applied slowly to the fascia it is able to elongate.
Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)
The use of Myofascial Release allows each patient to be seen as a unique individual. The one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which the therapist uses a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapies. Independence is promoted through education of proper body mechanics, self-treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.
Each Myofascial Release Treatment session is performed directly on the skin without oils, creams or mechanical tools. This enables the therapist to detect the location of fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure allowing for the release of the fascia.
Utilizing the John F. Barnes' Myofascial Release Approach allows healing to occur in ways where other treatment methods are unsuccessful. EW Physical Therapy provides therapeutic treatments customized to individual needs in order to relieve pain and dysfunction and treat the body as a whole.
